Updated: Jul 25, 2018
Office online is really powerful for your users on the road or in the era of BYOD.
They can work on different Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint ...) and the changes are replicated everywhere and even more, co-authoring capabilities enhance collaboration.
As a security perspective, you would like to have these files staying on the corporate space and not anywhere else - on a personal computer or third-party cloud storage service.
In addition of blocking download attachment on OWA (Outlook Web Access), restricting to save only on your business OneDrive cloud storage help you to keep control of where the documents are saved.
The use cases are:
Block third-party hosted storage services.
Only OneDrive For Business/SharePoint is the authorized storage space.
The control can be setup within Office365 admin portal, proceed as follows:
1. Navigate to https://portal.office.com/adminportal/home#/Settings/ServicesAndAddIns and 2. Click on Office Online.
Then, under the Office Online menu:
1. Turn off the Allow people to use third-party hosted storage services.
2. Save the configuration.
In addition of blocking download attachment under Outlook Web Access (OWA), this security feature blocks third party hosted storage services and avoid another way of data leakage.
Users can still work and save their files under the company storage space (OneDrive/SharePoint).
